Day 27-30: Rain, Sleet and No Phone

Day 27: Mile 454 to 471   (17 miles)

Storm is moving in today. I text Mary who is a trail angel who gives rides to hikers between Acton and Agua Dulce. She was going to pick me up before 11am and get me up to Agua Dulce. Once I arrived, I went into the store and loaded up on new water bottles since I have been down two bottles for the last few days. I then went next door to charge my phone since I won’t have the sun for nearly two days. I got a nice spaghetti and garlic bread lunch which was huge in serving size!

(Some of the land burned by the fires)

Another long walk ahead of me today. Early on I passed a trail cleaning crew known as the Southern California Trail Gorillas. They had brought along their horse named Duke to help carry in the equipment to clear downed trees and fix other parts of the trail as needed. They do a great job maintaining the first 700 miles of the PCT for hikers and horse travel. Continue reading

Day 23-24: Unplanned Detour

Day 23: Mile 369 to 381   (12 miles)

Got a ride back up to the trail head by Curtis and got my pack and poles out of the trunk. Said my thanks and goodbyes to him and just so happens a couple people needed a ride into town, so he was able to give them a lift back. I started my hike when I ran into Legend not to far down the trail. We talked about soccer and he wanted to play goalie against me on the trail. He set up a goal in the dirt using my hiking poles as goalposts and wanted me to throw pine cones as if they were the soccer balls. Continue reading

Day 20: Mile 328 to 342   (14 miles)

Last night was a windy one! Crawled out of my tent and quickly got packed up. Was excited to get into Cajon Pass today. Started hiking and it was one of those days where the sun came out for a little bit and then was covered up by the clouds for long periods of time. Once I got up in elevation a little bit, I was able to look back at Silverwood Lake which I hadn’t seen the night before. Continue reading

Day 18-19: Cinco de Mayo and my First Thirty

Day 18: Mile 285 to 298   (13 miles)

Woke up and got an early start this morning knowing it was going to be a short day. Today is Cinco de Mayo. Seth came up with the idea of celebrating it while we were sitting in Big Bear Lake. Knowing there was a great place to celebrate it with fellow hikers. Seth packed in the Tequila while myself and Malia packed in everything you can possibly want in a burrito/taco.

Day 16-17: Big Bear Lake

Day 16: Mile 253 to 266   (13 miles)

Today was the day to finally get into Big Bear Lake. It was a decent hike with not to much elevation change and I arrived to the highway with Seth and Malia at the same time. We were greeted by Legend who hiked the PCT in 2013. He made us some apple Kool-Aid when we arrived. He gave us a marker to sign and write something on the truck he is driving up and down the whole trail helping people out as needed or just making food. I used the blue marker and wrote on the truck before we walked across the highway to try and hitch a ride into town.
